Their dreams of a college education fulfilled,
many All Sports students have turned back to ask, “Now what can I do
to help others as I was helped?” None has done this more dramatically
than Ricky Sailor.
Their dreams of a college education fulfilled,
many All Sports students have turned back to ask, “Now what can I do
to help others as I was helped?” None has done this more dramatically
than Ricky Sailor.
A native of West Tampa, Ricky attended Leto High
School where he was an outstanding football player. He graduated from Butte
Community College, then transferred to Texas Tech where he earned a degree
in Human Development and Family Studies. Working with people in need comes
naturally to Ricky. Respectful of their individuality, yet sympathetic to
their needs, Ricky has the ability to challenge people to take responsibility
for their lives.
When Ricky returned to his hometown, he used his
degree - first as a counselor at the Children’s Home, then as a
counselor at Dacco. Everywhere he worked, Ricky’s excellent clinical
skills, sincerity and maturity were always evident. As a volunteer with All
Sports, Ricky demonstrated these same qualities. He was always there,
available to advise high schoolers as well as participate in All Sports
volunteer projects.
But, two years ago, Ricky decided what he
was doing just wasn’t enough. The very first All Sports Christmas
Chip-In began. Working with a school social worker, a needy family was
identified. Ricky got to work. A natural born leader, with a persuasive
personality, he was able to rally all of his friends, teammates, coaches,
family and co-workers to contribute toys, clothes, furniture, gift
certificates, food, money and even a tree! That year, the family had
everything they needed to celebrate a happy holiday. In 2004, Ricky’s
Christmas Chip-In again provided everything for a family down on their
luck. This year, Ricky has set his sights to help two displaced Katrina
families and two local families enjoy the spirit of Christmas. Ricky
Sailor is a real believer in being his brother’s keeper.
